What is CA SB553?
California SB 553 is a workplace violence prevention law that requires all California employers (except healthcare & correctional facilities covered under Title 8 section 3342, and businesses with 10 or fewer employees with public contact) to implement a written prevention plan and provide annual training to employees starting July 1, 2024. The law is enforced by Cal/OSHA and is aimed at reducing incidents of workplace violence across non-healthcare industries.
Employers are required to:
- Develop a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP) with employee input
- Train the entire workforce, including training on your specific WVPP
- Effective date: July 1, 2024
- Train annually, upon hire, when the WVPP is changed, or new hazards emerge
